Greek: Ἐν τούτῳ γινώσκομεν ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ μένομεν καὶ αὐτὸς ἐν ἡμῖν, ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος αὐτοῦ δέδωκεν ἡμῖν.

Transliterated Greek: En toutō ginōskomen hoti en autō menomen kai autos en hēmin, hoti ek tou pneumatos autou dedōken hēmin.

Literal Word for Word Translation: By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, that he has given us of his Spirit.

Vocab: γινώσκομεν, ginōskomen, we come to know; μένομεν, menomen, we abide; πνεύματος, pneumatos, spirit.

Commentary: Only by the Spirit are we able to abide in Christ and He to abide in us. Without it, there is no abiding that enables one to love as God loves, to be in the light, to know the truth, and to be saved! There are no good works or religious activity that we can do to do produce any of it! We are only able to do what is truly good by abiding in Him. Jn 15:5, I am the vine and you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
