No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. (ESV)

No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. (KJV)

Greek: θεὸν οὐδεὶς πώποτε τεθέαται. ἐὰν ἀγαπῶμεν ἀλλήλους, ὁ θεὸς ἐν ἡμῖν μένει καὶ ἡ ἀγάπη αὐτοῦ ἐν ἡμῖν τετελειωμένη ἐστίν.

Transliterated Greek: theon oudeis pōpote tetheatai. ean agapōmen allēlous, ho theos en hēmin menei kai hē agapē autou en hēmin teteleiōmenē estin.

Literal Word for Word Translation: No one has ever looked upon God. If we love one another, God resides in us and his love is made perfect in us.

Vocab: τεθέαται, tetheatai, he has looked/gazed upon ; τετελειωμένη, teteleiōmenē, has been made perfect.

Commentary: No one has seen God directly, as maybe the Gnostics were claiming they were able to do with their mystical knowledge, but John notes that we know God is present when the Christian community loves one another.
