Verses to review today: 1 John 1:1-4:10
New Verse: 1 John 4:11

Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (ESV)

Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. (KJV)

Greek: Ἀγαπητοί, εἰ οὕτως ὁ θεὸς ἠγάπησεν ἡμᾶς, καὶ ἡμεῖς ὀφείλομεν ἀλλήλους ἀγαπᾶν.

Transliterated Greek: Agapētoi, ei houtōs ho theos ēgapēsen hēmas, kai hēmeis opheilomen allēlous agapan.

Literal Word for Word Translation: Beloved, if God loved us in this way, then we ought to love one another.

Vocab: ὀφείλομεν, opheilomen, we are obligated.

Commentary: God’s grace upon us is not to stop with us, but is to be passed on to others. And we are definitely obligated to love others who are also children of God, having received the propitiation (atonement) for sins. As we receive mercy, we are to give mercy. As we are forgiven, we are to forgive others. As we are loved, we are to love.
