Verses to review today: 1 John 5:1-17
New Verse: 1 John 5:18
We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him. (ESV)
We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. (KJV)
Transliterated Greek: Oidamen hoti pas ho gegennēmenos ek tou theou ouch hamartanei, all’ ho gennētheis ek tou theou tērei auton kai ho ponēros ouch haptetai autou.
Literal Word for Word Translation: We know that everyone who has been brought forth by God does not sin, but the one who was brought forth by God, He protects him and the evil one does not touch him.
Vocab:
Commentary: Jesus is the one who was brought forth by God. It is Jesus who protects the children of God from the evil one. In reciting the Lord’s Prayer, it is often said, “deliver us from evil,” but it is really “deliver us from the evil one.” Thus, it is Jesus who guards us from the grips of Satan. He is our shield. However, that does not mean that we are not touched by the presence of evil in the world! As long as we are in the world, we will be touched by the presence of evil. But, the evil one will never own us in bondage again!
As stated previously, those who are of God do not make a practice of sin as a way of life. That does not mean that Christians do not sin. But, there is not to be a mind set on sin rather than a mind set on the Spirit (Rom 8:1-11).
