and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. (ESV)

And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. (KJV)

Transliterated Greek: kai pan pneuma ho mē homologei ton Iēsoun ek tou theou ouk estin• kai touto estin to tou antichristou, ho akēkoate hoti erchetai, kai nyn en tō kosmō estin ēdē.

Literal Word for Word Translation: and every spirit that does not confess Jesus, is not from God, and this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard that it is coming, and now is already in the world.

Vocab: ἀκηκόατε, akēkoate, you have heard; ἔρχεται, erchetai, it is coming; νῦν, nyn, now; ἤδη, ēdē, already.

Commentary: Verse 3 continues verse 2. Notice that this verse isn’t saying that every spirit that denies Christ is not from God, but every spirit that does not confess Christ is not from God. Such a spirit is of the antichrist! What does this imply about churches that might not outright deny that Jesus is God in the flesh, but that do not confess Him either? The Holy Spirit’s role in the world is to confess Christ. As He is confessed, believers are joined to the risen Jesus through that confession and are transformed as well as secured for eternity. How can we say a church has the Holy Spirit present if they are not exalting Christ in their worship? If they are not exalting Christ, then they are preaching what itchy ears want to hear intead. Wouldn’t it be be just like Satan to entice churches to preach everything but Christ? That would be the ultimate deception! Unfortunately, it is happening way too much throughout America these days! This results in people thinking they are saved but not knowing Jesus. A personal relationship with Jesus is the basis for salvation. It will not bode well for those who lead these churches and are leading the sheep astray! That brings us to Mt. 7:13-27 with emphasis on verses 21-23, 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Also, 2 Peter 2:1-3, But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

And 2 Tim 4:1-5, I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
