Literal Word for Word Translation: because this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,

Commentary: This is the commandement that Jesus taught Himself. Love God and love your neighbor as yourself (Mt 22:34-40). They will know you are a disciple by your love for one another (Jn 13:34-35).
