New Verse: 1 John 3:8
Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. (ESV)
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. (KJV)
Transliterated Greek: ho poiōn tēn hamartian ek tou diabolou estin, hoti ap’ archēs ho diabolos hamartanei. eis touto ephanerōthē ho huios tou theou, hina lysē ta erga tou diabolou.
Literal Word for Word Translation: he who practices sin is of the devil because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. For this reason the Son of God was revealed in order to destroy the works of the devil.
Vocab: τοῦ διαβόλου, tou diabolou, of the slanderer (devil); ὁ διάβολος, ho diabolos, the slanderer (devil); λύσῃ, lysē, to destroy; ἔργα, erga, works.
Commentary: Satan deceived Adam and Eve from the very beginning leading to the fall of man. All who sin (which is all people) do so because of being born in the fallen state, being born outside of knowledge of God. Christ came into the world to expose the devil’s works and release men from his lies that keep them in bondage. Not only did He reveal the lies and establish truth (darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining), but His very death on the cross took away the penalty of sin, and His resurrection established a new sinless and righteous humanity for all who trust in Him (He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world; also Ro 5; Eph 2:13-22).
