Verses to review today: 1 John 1:1-3:6
New Verse: 1 John 3:7
Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. (ESV)
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. (KJV)
Greek: Τεκνία, μηδεὶς πλανάτω ὑμᾶς• ὁ ποιῶν τὴν δικαιοσύνην δίκαιός ἐστιν, καθὼς ἐκεῖνος δίκαιός ἐστιν•
Transliterated Greek: Teknia, mēdeis planatō hymas• ho poiōn tēn dikaiosynēn dikaios estin, kathōs ekeinos dikaios estin
Literal Word for Word Translation: little children, let no one deceive you, the one who is practicing righteousness is righteous, just as that one is righteous.
Vocab: πλανάτω; planatō, let him cause to stray; ποιῶν, poiōn, he is doing; δικαιοσύνην, dikaiosynēn, righteousness; δίκαιός, dikaios, righteous.
Commentary: Practicing righteousness does not make one righteous, because no one is righteous by their own effort (Ro 3:23). However, one who is being transformed into the likeness of Jesus by abiding in Him, has been credited with His righteousness (Ro 3:21-26; 4:3-6), and by abiding in Him, and letting Him abide in them, does do righteous things (1 Jn 3:5-6; Jn 15:5). This is in contrast to the Gnostics who say they have no need to do righteous things. And, given they do not have the indwelled Spirit, it isn’t in their nature to do anyway.
