Commentary: Here we have an example, and the supreme one at that, of a blessing bestowed upon those who are in Christ. We have been released from the imprisonment of guilt that is based on the offenses we have done against God. It isn’t that a bail has been paid, but the full cost of the sentence has been paid. Jesus’ death covers the judgment due to us because of our trespasses against God. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom 6:23). This doesn’t make sense to our human minds, but God’s infinite wisdom and insight drives His motives. It cost immensely, the life and suffering of God’s own son. But it is the greatest gift from heaven itself that God can give us. but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners Jesus died for us (Rom 5:8) It may seem gory and beyond reason to the skeptic, but it magnifies God’s glory and wisdom to the believer! There is no other way by which mankind can be freed from his lostness, brought into harmony with God, but by receiving His righteousness through Jesus Christ in place of our unrighteousness. This is the greatest blessing possible because no other blessing releases us from the depths of hell.
