Commentary: John was writing so that the joy of the apostles may be complete (1 Jn 1:4). He wrote so that the precious children of God may not go on sinning (1 Jn 2:1). He was writing to children, fathers, and young men (1 Jn 2:12-14). He wrote to warn them about the deceivers (1 Jn 2:26). All of what He wrote was a testimony: a testimony of the apostles, of Jesus Christ, of the Spirit, and of God. They did not need to be concerned with the Gnostic deceivers, but were to be certain that they indeed had, and we have who believe today have, eternal life because the very presence of God was with in them and is in us testifying through love, knowledge, and obedience that only comes from God.
