Verses to review today: 1 John 3:1-5:9
New Verse: 1 John 5:10
Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. (ESV)
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. (KJV)
Transliterated Greek: ho pisteuōn eis ton huion tou theou echei tēn martyrian en heautō, ho mē pisteuōn tō theō pseustēn pepoiēken auton, hoti ou pepisteuken eis tēn martyrian hēn memartyrēken ho theos peri tou huiou autou.
Literal Word for Word Translation: The one believing in the Son of God has the testimony in himself, the one not believing God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has testified concerning his Son.
Vocab: μεμαρτύρηκεν, memartyrēken, he has borne witness / testifed.
Commentary: Since the Spirit is the one who testifies (v6), and the Spirit is in him who believes (2:27; 3:24; 4:2,4,14-15), whoever believes has the testimony within himself. Then anyone who does not believe the testimony of the Spirit, has essentially declared God to be a liar. Anyone who declares God to be a liar cannot have union with Him since he lacks faith and thus cannot be saved! This is essentially blasphemy against the Holy Spirit – the one who testifies about Jesus (Matt. 12:28-32).
