New Verse: 1 John 3:24
Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. (ESV)
And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. (KJV)
Transliterated Greek: kai ho tērōn tas entolas autou en autō menei kai autos en autō• kai en toutō ginōskomen hoti menei en hēmin, ek tou pneumatos hou hēmin edōken.
Literal Word for Word Translation: and he who keeps his commandments abides in him and he in him• and by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given to us.
Vocab: πνεύματος, pneumatos, spirit
Commentary: This is a repeating theme here in 1 John and in the gospel of John. Those who love God keep His commandments. Only those who keep His commandments have God living in them. This is because, it is by the Spirit that anyone has the love which motivates them and gives them the desire to keep His commandments. Those who believe they can continue to live however they want, including the Gnostics, do not have the Spirit in them.
