New Verse: 1 John 2:25

And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life. (ESV)

And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. (KJV)

Greek: καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἐπαγγελία ἣν αὐτὸς ἐπηγγείλατο ἡμῖν, τὴν ζωὴν τὴν αἰώνιον.

Transliterated Greek: kai hautē estin hē epangelia hēn autos epēngeilato hēmin, tēn zōēn tēn aiōnion.

Literal Word for Word Translation: and this is the promise which he himself promised us, eternal life.

Vocab: ἐπαγγελία, epangelia, promise; ἐπηγγείλατο, epēngeilato, he had promised/proclaimed; ζωὴν, zōēn, life; αἰώνιον, aiōnion, eternal.

Commentary: John 17:1-3, When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

If we remain in the gospel – that Jesus, the Son of God who came in the flesh, died for the forgiveness of sins of those who believe in Him by faith – then we will remain in the Son and in the Father, knowing them intimately. Eternal life means, the life of God. Only God is eternal. Only He has life everlasting. Only He can give it. And it is through knowing Him and His Son – that we know their life as our own.

Many make confessions of faith, but do not abide in the gospel. There is the basic gospel, just stated in the last paragraph, and the broader gospel that is the whole Bible. Without abiding in His Word, we do not come to know Him as He is. We can know some things about God by experience of the providence of God in our life, but we cannot truly know Him if we deny or neglect His Word. Eternal life comes through faith from hearing and responding to the Word of Christ (Rom 10:17; 1 Ti 6:12; Gal 2:20; He 10:39; John 5:24; 6:63, 68; 1 John 1:1). James 1:21b, receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
