Verses to review today: 1 John 1:3-2:1
New Verse: 1 John 2:2
He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.(ESV)
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (KJV)
Greek: καὶ αὐτὸς ἱλασμός ἐστιν περὶ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ἡμῶν, οὐ περὶ τῶν ἡμετέρων δὲ μόνον ἀλλὰ καὶ περὶ ὅλου τοῦ κόσμου.
Transliterated Greek: kai autos hilasmos estin peri tōn hamartiōn hēmōn, ou peri tōn hēmeterōn de monon alla kai peri holou tou kosmou.
Literal Word for Word Translation: and he himself is the propitiation (or the expiation, or the atoning sacrifice) with regard to our sins, and not with regard to ours only but also with regard to the whole world.
Vocab: ἱλασμός, hilasmos, propitiation/expiation/atoning sacrifice; μόνον, monon, only; ὅλου, holou, whole; τοῦ κόσμου, tou kosmou, of the world.
Commentary: I am not able to give adequate commentary for this important and controversial verse tonight and will update on Monday. Many books happen to be written about the words in and meaning of this verse. The main point is that Jesus is the sacrifice for our sins. He is the satisfaction and the atonement for our sins. What that means with respect to God is the complication and will be discussed in the update. Stay tuned.
