By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; (ESV)

And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. (KJV)

Greek: [Καὶ] ἐν τούτῳ γνωσόμεθα ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας ἐσμέν, καὶ ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ πείσομεν τὴν καρδίαν ἡμῶν,

Transliterated Greek: [Kai] en toutō gnōsometha hoti ek tēs alētheias esmen, kai emprosthen autou peisomen tēn kardian hēmōn,

Literal Word for Word Translation: [and] by this we will come to know that we are of the truth, and will convince our heart before him,

Vocab: καρδίαν, kardian, heart.

Commentary: Verse 19 sets up verse 20 and following where we will find out in the conclusion of chapter three how are to come to know we are of the truth and that our hearts will be convinced. Thus, John will be addressing assurance of salvation.
